Over-Dentures:
The term “over-denture” means that all or part of a denture fits over the top of “something.” This “something” can be a natural tooth, natural tooth root, a single dental implant, multiple stud implants, or over a bar that is supported by dental implants. These over-dentures have attachments associated with them that have nylon parts that “gripper or snap” the denture(s) onto the implants or natural teeth. These nylon parts wear and need replacing. Therefore, these patients are seen more often. The roots and implants need to be cleaned professionally. The frequency of these dental hygiene appointments varies depending again upon the oral hygiene of the patient and the complexity of the dentures.
Hybrid Dentures:
Hybrid dentures are dentures that are literally “screwed” onto the implants. There are other types of hybrids that are a “friction fit” and are retained simply by the way metal “sleeves” inside the denture fits onto the top of the implants. There can be any number of dental implants onto which the denture is fixed in place. These dentures must be removed often every 6 months for cleaning them since they are fixed in place and cannot be removed by the patient. The dental hygiene appointment for these patients is a much longer appointment and will include time with the doctor to remove and place the prosthesis back onto the implants. As you can imagine, these dentures are much more costly and the maintenance hygiene appointments are also much more costly. Since these dentures usually have resin teeth and are in the patient’s mouth all the time (24 hours a day/7 days a week), these teeth can wear out much sooner. Dentures last longer generally in patients that can take their dentures out at night.
